Crime Cameras
SafeCam
SafeCam was an initiative of the French Quarter Management District that was co-founded by French Quarter residents Larry Lane and Bob Simms in October 2012 and evolved into a partnership between FQMD and the New Orleans Police Department’s Eighth District, when it became known as SafeCam8. The objective was to provide a resource where citizens and business owners could register their surveillance cameras with the New Orleans Police Department to help solve crimes in their neighborhood.
Camera registration was initially hosted on the FQMD website and grew from 100 cameras to over 1,400.
The initiative was so successful that the City adopted the project as SafeCam NOLA in March 2014. Any detective who wishes to view camera documentation must request footage from camera owners; the system provides investigators with only the contact information of area residents and business owners who operate security cameras in the vicinity of a crime, not direct access to cameras.
Adopt-A-Block
The New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation has developed a program called Adopt-A-Block to further the mission of SafeCam NOLA. This program works with churches, businesses, homeowners and the NOPD to install private security cameras in crime hot spots.
Remove, Lock, Take
Remove, Lock, Take is an auto-theft prevention signage program funded and designed by the French Quarter Management District, and supported by the NOPD.
