GAMBIT: New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno says her administration is in the initial stages of revitalizing the Canal Street shopping district downtown, a historic thoroughfare bordering the French Quarter that has been long neglected since its heyday.
At a July 28 press conference at Rubensteins, the men’s clothing store that has operated on Canal since the 1920s, the Moreno administration and partners said initially the city will focus on safety and quality of life issues, including getting street lights back on, increasing police presence and ramping up anti-blight code enforcement.
